With its curious little face and a look that blends tadpole with mythical creature, the axolotl has captured popular attention thanks to the game Minecraft, where it appears as a tiny aquatic warrior. But beyond the screen, this amphibian native to Mexico faces a more fragile reality: it’s at risk of extinction and is being studied by scientists for its astonishing regenerative abilities.
From Aztec Underworld to Mexican Currency
The axolotl is part of the amphibian family, and its most well-known species, Ambystoma mexicanum, lives mainly in the canals of Xochimilco, a wetland region in southern Mexico City. Measuring about 20 centimeters long and covered in smooth skin, it’s seen by some as adorable — and by others, as strange.

Unlike other amphibians that go through metamorphosis and transition to life on land, the axolotl remains aquatic its entire life, keeping its external gills and tadpole-like tail. This unique trait fed into ancient Mesoamerican legends: in Aztec mythology, the axolotl was linked to the god Xolotl, guardian of the underworld and transformation.
Today, this ancient symbol appears in unexpected places. The axolotl has been featured on the 50-peso Mexican banknote and even decorates tour buses in the capital, often shown in its rare albino form.
Real Superpowers: Regeneration and Cancer Resistance
What truly intrigues scientists goes far beyond its quirky looks. The axolotl is one of the few creatures known to regenerate lost body parts with remarkable efficiency. It can regrow limbs, its tail, and even vital organs like the heart, liver, eyes, and parts of the brain.
Researchers around the world are exploring how this natural gift might inspire human therapies. The idea is to apply the axolotl’s “biological code” to regenerative medicine — potentially aiding people injured in accidents, those who have lost limbs, or patients suffering from organ damage.
Veterinarian Erika Servín Zamora, a specialist in axolotls, highlights another fascinating aspect: the species seems to have a natural resistance to cancer. “In 15 years of research, I’ve never encountered a single case of malignant tumors in axolotls. We believe their ability to regenerate cells may play a role in this resistance,” she told the BBC.
Small, Endangered, and Incredibly Valuable
Unfortunately, despite all its biological power, the axolotl is endangered. Pollution in its native canals, urban expansion, and invasive species have severely reduced its population in the wild. Conservation programs are underway in Mexico, but the fight to preserve this biodiversity gem is still challenging.
From virtual worlds to real ecosystems, the axolotl reminds us that fascinating creatures swim — and survive — in the space where science, history, and imagination meet.
