Fatou, a gorilla living at the Berlin Zoo in Germany, celebrated her remarkable 68th birthday last Friday (11). Born in 1957 and welcomed to the zoo in 1959, she holds the title of the oldest known gorilla in the world living under human care.

To celebrate the special occasion, Fatou was treated to a delicious gift — a basket filled with fresh fruit, prepared just for her. This iconic elder, already listed in the record books for her impressive age, lives in a private area of the zoo, away from the other five gorillas, where she enjoys the peace and quiet that her age deserves.
Experts note that in the wild, gorillas typically live between 35 and 40 years. However, in captivity, with proper veterinary care and nutrition, their lifespan can be significantly extended — as Fatou’s extraordinary life clearly demonstrates. She remains a symbol of longevity and the importance of wildlife care.
