In recent days, residents and tourists in Imbituba, on the southern coast of Santa Catarina, were surprised by the unusual presence of a leopard seal resting on a public beach. This species is rarely seen in Brazil, as it typically inhabits colder regions near Antarctica and the Subantarctic islands. Its appearance has drawn great interest from environmental specialists.

Although uncommon, this is not the first time the animal has been observed in the area this year: back in May, another leopard seal was recorded between Molhes da Barra, in Laguna, and Praia do Luz, also in Imbituba.
Guidelines for the public
To ensure the animal’s safety and well-being, monitoring teams have reinforced some important precautions:
- Do not approach and allow the seal to rest undisturbed;
- Keep a safe distance and avoid crowds;
- Refrain from making loud noises that could startle the animal;
- Never attempt to feed it.
The leopard seal is currently being monitored by the Beach Monitoring Project of the Santos Basin (PMP-BS), along with volunteers and the Instituto Australis, which inspects the area daily.
Reports of harassment or disturbances can be made to the Baleia Franca Environmental Protection Area (@apadabaleiafranca.icmbio), the Environmental Police (@pmscambiental), or Ibama (@ibamagov).
A special visitor
The presence of the leopard seal highlights the importance of preserving the coast of Santa Catarina, a region rich in biodiversity that occasionally welcomes rare visitors from distant seas. This event also serves as a reminder of the need for respectful coexistence between humans and marine life in order to ensure conservation.
