Mako Shark, the Fastest Shark in the World, Spotted Near the Shore in Imbituba (SC)

On Monday (29), a mako shark was seen just a few meters from the sand at Praia da Vila in Imbituba, on the southern coast of Santa Catarina, Brazil. Known for its incredible speed, this species can reach up to 70 km/h (43 mph).

🦈 🌊 Jules Soto, professor and curator at the Univali Oceanographic Museum, explains that the scientific name of the mako shark is Isurus oxyrinchus and that the risk of encounters with humans is very low. “Although they prefer deeper waters, some individuals may approach the coast. But there are no recorded attacks, so there’s no reason for concern. They mainly feed on medium-sized fish, so they’re probably hunting,” he said.

About the Species

In November 2023, a mako shark’s head was found in Florianópolis. The Teleost and Elasmobranch Biology Laboratory at UFSC explained that mako sharks feed on tuna, marlins, and even other sharks.

Unlike most sharks, the mako can keep its blood warmer than the surrounding water, keeping its muscles active and ready to swim. This allows it to explore colder and deeper areas in search of food.
