Incredible Encounter: World’s Largest Shark Spotted in Ilhabela (SP)

A rare and thrilling moment was captured by two biologists off the coast of Ilhabela, in São Paulo’s northern coastline. Daniel Munhoz and Larissa Uema, both dive instructors in the region, filmed a majestic whale shark — known as the largest shark on the planet. The sighting took place on March 5th and quickly drew attention on social media.

With its body covered in distinctive white spots, the whale shark impresses not only with its massive size but also with its feeding habits, filtering plankton and small fish. Daniel emphasized the animal’s crucial role in maintaining the ocean’s health: “The mere presence of these giants helps keep marine ecosystems balanced. They are part of a natural cycle that is vital for life on Earth.”

Daniel described the experience as transformative. “Diving alongside a whale shark brings a type of happiness that no human-made experience can match. If we don’t shift our focus toward preserving nature, we are heading toward a bleak future,” he warned.

In an exclusive interview with CNN, Larissa highlighted how the whale shark can help change public perceptions about sharks. “Many people associate all sharks with apex predators like the great white, but most species don’t fit that image. Encountering a whale shark in Brazilian waters is an extraordinary privilege,” the biologist said.

This sighting reinforces the importance of marine conservation and shows that Brazil’s coastline is home to true treasures of biodiversity.
