The famous Blue Lagoon in Maragogi, located on the northern coast of Alagoas and known as the “Brazilian Caribbean,” has had all visits and tours suspended by order of the Federal Court. The decision aims to protect the local ecosystem, which has been threatened by tourism activities.

Reasons for the Ban
Access to the Blue Lagoon was prohibited until 2022. However, a municipal decree authorized the daily entry of a significant number of vessels and professionals, including up to three catamarans, 40 speedboats, 20 photographers, and two recreational diving companies.
This authorization, according to the Federal Prosecutor’s Office (MPF), occurred without thorough technical studies or public consultation. The agency emphasized that the decision prioritized tourism over the environmental preservation of this ecologically sensitive area.
Environmental Importance of the Region
The Blue Lagoon is located within an Environmental Protection Area (APA) that houses Brazil’s largest coral reef system. Established in 1997, this APA safeguards approximately 120 km of coastline between Tamandaré (PE) and Maceió (AL). The region serves as a habitat for endangered species such as the West Indian manatee and various sea turtles.
Studies referenced by the MPF reveal that activities such as stepping on corals, boat anchoring, pollution, and disruption of local fauna have caused significant harm to the reefs. These impacts threaten the health and resilience of the coral ecosystems, putting the entire region at risk.
The Court’s Decision
Judge André Granja, from the 3rd Federal Court of Alagoas, emphasized that the municipal decree does not have the authority to permit visits to an area protected by federal environmental regulations. He stated that the misuse of sensitive areas jeopardizes ecological balance, harms biodiversity, and directly affects human well-being.
Maragogi’s Response
The Maragogi City Hall has expressed its disagreement with the decision and announced plans to appeal. The municipal government also stated that it is working to mitigate the economic and social impacts caused by the suspension of tours. Measures are being studied to support families dependent on tourism and ensure legal security for workers in the sector.
