Tourist Bitten by Shark While Swimming in Fernando de Noronha

A 46-year-old tourist from Mato Grosso was bitten by a shark while swimming at Praia do Porto in Fernando de Noronha on Tuesday afternoon (19). Despite the scare, she suffered only minor injuries.

The Incident

The tourist was rescued from the water with the help of a boat and taken to São Lucas Hospital, the only hospital in the archipelago, where she received medical attention and was discharged on the same day. The bite affected the upper and lateral region of her femur, resulting in a cut approximately 10 centimeters long.

According to the island’s administration, the shark’s upper bite only grazed her skin, while the lower bite caused a deeper wound, reaching the subcutaneous tissue.

Species Involved

Experts identified the shark as a nurse shark, known for being less aggressive compared to other species. According to the Pernambuco State Shark Incident Monitoring Committee (Cemit), the bite was likely “investigative,” meaning it was a defensive reaction to an accidental encounter.

The tourist confirmed this theory, stating that she might have accidentally bumped into one of the sharks while swimming. She also noted that the water was teeming with sharks at the time.

Recommendations for Visitors

Cemit classified the episode as an “occasional encounter” rather than an aggressive incident. The committee advises both tourists and residents to avoid intentional approaches to marine animals. Visitors are encouraged to respect the natural behavior of sharks and maintain a safe distance during water activities.

Despite the unexpected event, the situation was resolved quickly and without further complications, highlighting the preparedness of local teams to handle such occurrences.
