A newly released image of the Titan submarine, which imploded during an expedition to the Titanic wreck last year, was unveiled this Monday (16) during the first day of hearings investigating the tragic incident.
The image shows the submarine’s tail section, confirming the death of all five people aboard. The wreckage was found on June 22, 2023, four days after the Titan went missing, when a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) identified parts of the submersible on the ocean floor.
According to the investigation report, on June 22, at 10:50 AM local time, the Pelagic Research Services 6000 ROV, which had been actively searching since its arrival at the site, discovered the Titan’s rear tail cone along with other debris. This discovery was crucial in concluding that the Titan had suffered a catastrophic implosion, leading to the death of all five occupants.
The hearings, led by the U.S. Coast Guard, are expected to continue until the end of next week. The investigation is still ongoing, and the Coast Guard will submit a final report with its findings and recommendations to the U.S. government once the hearings are concluded.
The Titan, owned by the company OceanGate, disappeared on June 18, 2023, during an expedition to the Titanic wreck site. Among the passengers were OceanGate’s CEO, Richard Stockton Rush III, and four other individuals, including three billionaires. The submersible imploded at a depth of 3,600 meters due to intense water pressure, resulting in the death of everyone aboard.
